PRF and PRP Treatments: What Are "Vampire Facials" and Do They Work?

"Vampire Facials" for Skin Rejuvenation: All About PRF & PRP Treatments

Cosmetologist using centrifuge to perform PRP treatment

If you're scared by the phrase "vampire facial," you're not alone. (::slow hand raise::) It's a terrible name for a pretty awesome procedure. (No Dracula-spawned bats are coming to chomp on your skin. Promise.) (PRP) and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) treatments have become increasingly popular in the beauty industry. They're safe, effective, and not at all frightening.

What Is a PRP Treatment?

PRP refers to platelet-rich plasma, and PRP treatments offer the promise of younger-looking skin. They use components of the patient's own blood to help regenerate the skin tissue.

The beauty technician begins by drawing a small sample of blood, which is then spun in a centrifuge to separate out the platelets. In a PRP facial, the platelets are then injected back into the patient's skin, where they work to reduce wrinkles, improve skin tone and texture, minimize pores, reduce acne scars, and more.

What Is a PRF Treatment?

Like PRP treatments, PRF treatments use the patient's own blood. PRF refers to platelet-rich fibrin.

Both involve the extraction of platelets from a patient's blood, but they differ in the way the platelets are processed. PRP spins the blood at an extra high speed to extract the platelets, while PRF spins it more slowly. This allows it to retain fibrinogen molecules, which can improve tissue regeneration in some applications.

How Do PRP Facials Work?

The platelets found in PRP and PRF treatments contain growth factors that promote regeneration. When injected into the skin, these growth factors stimulate collagen production as well as elastin fibers, which help keep the skin looking youthful. They can also help reduce inflammation.

Potential benefits include:

  • Reduced wrinkles and fine lines
  • Plumping of sagging skin and creases
  • Improved complexion
  • Diminished acne scars

PRP/PRF facials aren't the only application for this technology either. Sports doctors and therapists have also adopted it as a possible aid to injury rehabilitation.

Microneedling with PRP

The combination of PRP and microneedling can also be effective. The process begins with microneedling, a minimally invasive procedure in which tiny needles are used to create microchannels on the face. Next, the platelet-rich plasma is spread over the skin and massaged into the newly created channels. The platelets are then activated by the body’s natural healing process.

Do PRP/PRF Facials Work?

The results of both PRP and PRF treatments vary from person to person, but most patients report visible results within a few weeks.

However, it's important to note that results may be temporary and multiple sessions may be necessary for long-term effects.

Why Are "Vampire Facials" So Popular?

PRP and PRF treatments have become increasingly popular because they provide natural results with minimal downtime or side effects. Since they use components of your own blood there is no risk of allergic reaction or rejection like there can be with other types of injections or fillers.

These treatments are also relatively affordable compared to other cosmetic procedures such as Botox or fillers, making them ideal for the beauty queen on a budget.

They're also popular for the same reason any skin rejuvenation treatment gets famous — famous people have gotten them and loved their results. Celebrities have turned to the procedure to address issues including a dull complexion and under-eye bags.

Is a PRP Treatment Right for Me?

Being as I don't know you, it's hard to say...

There are certain contraindications for PRP therapy. It isn't for people with specific chronic conditions, pregnant women, or active infections. There are also some diet and lifestyle choices — such as smoking — that may make it less effective.

But if you're looking for a safe, effective way to improve your skin, PRP/PRF facials might be worth considering.

Where Can I Get a PRP Treatment Near Me?

Hmm, let me think. Do I know a good place? (::wink::)
