The History of Body Contouring: From Corsets to Non-Invasive Body Sculpting

Since it's the end of the year, I thought we'd take a journey back in time with a quick look at ye olde body sculpting. Let's appreciate how far we've come and thank our stars we live in the age of non-invasive body contouring.

Pre-20th Century Body Sculpting

In olden days, our ancestors had some...intriguing methods for attaining their ideal bodies.

Foot-Binding

Beginning in the Song Dynasty (around the 10th century) in China, practitioners would tightly wrap the feet of girls as young as five years old. The process distorted the shape of the foot, causing the arch to break and the toes to fold under, thereby creating a desirable '"lotus foot" appearance.

Foot-binding was not merely a fashion statement but a profound cultural tradition influenced by ideas concerning social status, gender, and eligibility for marriage.

Waist-Binding and Corsetry

Western cultures may not have practiced foot binding, but they don't have a leg to stand on when it comes to primitive body sculpting.

The corset evolved from the stiff bodices incorporated into Renaissance or early modern fashion. Many featured a busk or stays made of wood, iron, or whalebone, but they actually weren't laced tightly. Clothing was expensive, and no one wanted to risk damaging or distorting these uncomfortable garments.

However, things took a turn in the following centuries as more exaggerated silhouettes became trendy. During the Victorian era, tightly laced garments could cinch waists to unimaginable sizes. They were uncomfortable and occasionally dangerous.

The twentieth century saw more impressive methods and a growing emphasis on health and comfort.

From Corsets to Girdles

As we moved into the 20th century, girdles emerged as a popular alternative to corsets. This significant shift in fashion reflected the evolving attitudes towards women's bodies, marking a turning point towards greater freedom and comfort (phew!).

The Dawn of Plastic Surgery

Plastic surgery came next, as individuals increasingly turned to surgical procedures to achieve their desired physical appearance. Plastic surgery introduced innovative techniques such as liposuction, which targeted localized fat deposits, and tummy tucks, which provided a solution for those seeking to contour their midsection.
