When it comes to skincare and rejuvenation, the terminology can feel as overwhelming as a crowded beauty aisle. From acronyms like “PRP” to procedures with fancy names that sound straight out of a sci-fi movie, it's easy to feel lost. But don't worry—you’re not alone! This glossary is here to simplify things so you can approach your skin rejuvenation goals with clarity and confidence.

Below, you’ll find the most common terms explained in simple, easy-to-understand language. By the end, you’ll be speaking the language of skin care like a pro!

AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acids)

These are water-soluble exfoliants commonly found in serums and peels. AHAs, like glycolic acid and lactic acid, brighten skin by sloughing off dead cells on the surface.

Antioxidants

These are skin superheroes, protecting your skin from free radical damage caused by sun exposure, pollution, and stress. Vitamin C and E are popular examples.

BBL (BroadBand Light Therapy)

A noninvasive treatment that uses light energy to target pigmentation, redness, and fine lines. Think of it as a reboot for clearer, smoother skin.

Collagen

A natural protein in your skin that keeps it firm and youthful. Many treatments aim to boost collagen production to reduce wrinkles and improve elasticity.

Chemical Peel

A treatment involving a chemical solution applied to the skin to exfoliate and remove damaged layers. This reveals smoother, more radiant skin underneath.

Dermal Fillers

Injectable substances used to restore volume, smooth wrinkles, or enhance facial contours. Popular fillers include hyaluronic acid-based products like Juvederm.

Dermaplaning

A skincare treatment where a technician uses a scalpel to gently scrape away dead skin cells and peach fuzz, leaving skin smooth and luminous.

Exfoliation

The process of removing dead skin cells from the surface to reveal fresh, healthy skin. Methods include physical scrubs and chemical exfoliants like AHAs and BHAs.

Hyaluronic Acid

A moisture-binding ingredient that hydrates and plumps skin. It's often found in serums, moisturizers, and dermal fillers.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)

A light-based treatment used to improve skin tone by targeting sunspots, discoloration, and redness. It's often described as a photo-facial.

Laser Resurfacing

A procedure that uses concentrated light beams to treat wrinkles, acne scars, and pigmentation by removing layers of skin or stimulating collagen.

Microneedling

This involves using small needles to create micro-injuries in the skin. It may sound scary, but it stimulates collagen production and enhances skin’s texture and firmness!

PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma)

A treatment where your own blood is drawn, processed, and injected back into your skin to promote healing, brightness, and rejuvenation.

Retinol

A derivative of Vitamin A that speeds up skin cell turnover. Known as an anti-aging powerhouse, it reduces wrinkles, unclogs pores, and evens skin tone.

SPF (Sun Protection Factor)

A measure of how well a product protects your skin from harmful UV rays. Prevention is key, so don’t skip sunscreen—even on cloudy days!

Ultrasound Therapy

A non-invasive skin-tightening treatment that uses ultrasound energy to stimulate collagen in deep layers of the skin. Often used for lifting.

UV Rays

Ultraviolet radiation from the sun that harms your skin over time, causing sunburn, premature aging, and even skin cancer. SPF shields you from this damage.

Vitamin C

A powerful antioxidant that brightens skin tone and boosts collagen. It’s popular in serums for reducing dark spots and signs of aging.
